I you have followed my blog for a long time, you know that one of my favorite photo accessory wasn't a photo item at all. It was my Jeep YJ, "Miss Peggy". It carried me everywhere I wanted to shoot. Here she is: I sold her about two years ago, to a good home.

Last year, my new photography accessory was a used travel trailer that I restored. My good Chevy Silverado was pulling it around the different state parks and it was in this trailer that I wrote two of my e-books. It actually was a lot of fun and I was able to get away from the city hustle and  bustle and clear my mind.

The Chevy "Sam" went to a young couple and the trailer "Freedom" was sold to another great growing family with pre-teen children. They will enjoy it.

My new endeavor is a little more costly and it will take a while to have everything the way I want. The idea is to have a big enough RV to travel across the Country and actually live in semi-permanently. I purchased the biggest pick-up truck I could find. It is a Ford f350 dually with a massive 7.3L diesel engine. I will work on it during the next six months or so to get it the way I really want it.

Next, I put a down payment on a fifth wheel and will take possession of it in December. 

This is "Tuesday"

I did some changes on "Ruby" already. I didn't like the off-market front grille and replaced it with a factory original, I was able to get a set of original running boards and also found a good fifth wheel hitch. I installed a new GPS, radio system with Sirius satellite radio. 

I keep changing the grille.

My wife doesn't like the black grille, but the "all chrome" off-market looked a little too gaudy for me.

So, this outfit will be my next best tool for photography. We will be able to, first, travel around the state and even venture in other states on weekends, long weekends and vacation. The ultimate benefit will be sometimes down the road, when we retire and live in our house on wheel full time. This is going to be my personal dream come true. Freedom to go where and when I want to, and to places I always wanted to visit. My photography will turn to travel photography, and although I will continue to write e-books about photography, I will be able to put more time photographing the Country, its People and its Wild Life. I plan to use video a lot more and document the places we visit, on a standpoint of full time RVers. Ultimately, it would be nice to sell the package to the Travel Channel.

I will continue this blog and will also manage a travelling blog as well.

I can hardly wait.

Pentax K-01 not so bad after all. It has the best Video capabilities of any Pentax.

Pentax introduced the K-30 a little while back and I already have that camera and wrote my last e-book about it.A few days ago, Pentax introduced the K-5 II and the K-5 II s. They are all great cameras, but none of the above can take video as well as the K-01.

The K-5, K-5 II and the K-5 II s cameras take good video, the problem is that they don't allow MPEG-4 AVC/H.264.   The K-5's can shoot video as follow:

• Full HD (1920x1080), 16:9, 25 fps
• HD (1280x720), 16:9, 30 fps and 25 fps
• VGA (640x480), 4:3, 30 fps and 25 fps

Pentax really raised the bar as far as movie recording. Not only does the K-30 records in full HD at 1080p, but it does so @ 24, 25 or 30 fps. In addition, the camera can record sound from the built-in mono microphone. It lacks stereo channels and external microphone capabilities.. The file format is MPEG-4 AVC/H.264.The K-30 can shoot video as follow:

•  FullHD (1920x1080) @ 16:9 aspect ratio, 30fps/ 25fps /24fps
•  HD (1280x720) @ 16:9 aspect ratio, 60fps/ 50fps/ 30fps/ 25fps/ 24fps
•  VGA (640x480) @ 4:3 aspect ratio,  30fps/ 25fps/ 24fps

Now, the K-01 can record the same formats as the K-30 but it has external stereo microphone input jack, and that makes a big difference. The K-01 does not have a prism viewfinder, but you wouldn't shoot a video through the viewfinder, you would shoot video with the LCD monitor. The K-01 is smaller and very portable. The 40mm kit lens is great.

I'm not much of a videographer, but I believe that the movies on the big screen are H.264

You can get there using the K-5's using software, but what's the point?

Ned Bunnel to step down as President of Pentax USA.

This is a sad day for Pentaxians. Ned Bunnell, which I respect enormously, is stepping down as President of Pentax USA. I've known Ned for about five years and his professionalism was exceptional. Ned, you will be missed. Ned is the only executive I know, from an international camera company, that always took time to communicate with clients. You can retire with a "Job well done,and mission accomplished".

Noboru Akahane to Become New President of "Americas"

Denver, CO (September 12, 2012) – Noboru Akahane, President of PENTAX RICOH IMAGING, Tokyo, Japan today announced several management changes at its U.S. subsidiary, PENTAX RICOH IMAGING AMERICAS CORPORATION, based in Denver, Colorado.

Current president, Ned Bunnell, will retire effective September 30th. “We appreciate Ned’s considerable contributions and leadership of the PENTAX operations in the U.S. over the past 7 years.  He has helped revitalize the PENTAX brand and re-establish our relationship with key retailers both in the photo specialty channel and larger national chain stores and we wish him well,” said Mr. Akahane.

Effective October 1st, Mr. Akahane will be appointed President of PENTAX RICOH IMAGING AMERICAS CORPORATION in addition to his current role as president of PENTAX RICOH IMAGING, Tokyo, Japan.

Also effective October 1st, Mr. Akahane announced the appointment of James Malcolm as Executive Vice President of PENTAX RICOH IMAGING AMERICAS. Mr. Malcolm will report directly to Mr. Akahane and he will be responsible for the leadership and operations of the U.S. subsidiary.

Most recently Mr. Malcolm has been working with Ricoh Company, Ltd. in Japan on the post-acquisition integration of PENTAX on a global basis. His insight and experience have set the direction and provided the vision needed to initiate management changes, including compliance with merger strategies.

“We are very pleased that Jim has joined the PENTAX RICOH team. He brings a wealth of knowledge to our camera business, accumulated from years in the photo industry,” said Mr. Akahane, “His knowledge of photographers’ needs, his proven business acumen, understanding of technology and insight into consumer trends are invaluable to our future.
