Meet Pentax's "A" team and watch Ned Bunnell's video test with the K-7.

Hi Pentaxian friends.

We, Pentaxians, don't always realize how fortunate we are to have the President of Pentax USA, "Mr. Ned Bunnell", communicating directly with us through his Blogsite. Last year, I wrote an article about how owning a Pentax DSLR was more like being part of a family, and it's still true today. You should read it, then continue reading this current article.

Mr. Bunnell has formed a team of superstars, all working at the Golden, Colorado office. Notably helpful members of the team are, not necessarily in order of importance, Michelle Martin, who is the PR & Events Manager for Pentax USA. She is the person that more people contact at Pentax, and she has the great personality that such a position requires. She even has her email posted with all Pentax Press releases. John Carlson, Product Manager and maybe an higher title by now, has several videos on YouTube introducing Pentax DSLRs and also has a presence on DPReview and PentaxForums. You can be sure that his comments on the forums are official, and correct. Chris Pound, currently Product Manager under John Carlson, (I think that's right), can be seen at all Events and also hosts the new Video on YouTube introducing the new K-7. What a great job he did. You can't help but like Chris' extroverted personality.

Pentax currently feature four photographers as part of the Pentaxian.com site. I met "The Inspirationalist" - Marc Dimalanta, "The Naturalist" - Julie Quarry, and the "Die Hard" - Kerrick James. All three are excellent photographers and great people. The K-7 might allow any of us to produce a bio with the HD video similarly to their bios on the Pentaxians site. I posted my interview with Makc a while back and I will post my interview with Julie sometime soon, I promise.

There are many more great members to the Pentax team, but the above are the people I had the opportunity to meet.

That said, don't miss the current article on Ned Bunnell's blog, all about the K-7 video capabilities.

Pentax DSLRs new Skin / Banner plus new search capabilities.

Visitors to this page also liked: See "Recommended Reading" on the right column. We honor reciprocal links. Email: brqyvn@aol.com

Hi Pentaxian friends.

New Blogger Banner:
We have change the banner at the top of this blog to keep pace with the introduction of the K-7. If you noticed, I did not include the K20D, the K200D and the K-2000, not because they are not great DSLRs, but because the new K-7 is such of an improvement, that it might be the camera that turns Pentax around to the best alternative for Entry-level, Amateurs, Advanced Amateurs and many Professional photographers as well. The K-7, which Pentax conservatively target the Advanced Amateurs, is as close to any Pro-camera as can be. Just a few years ago, the K-7 would have been described as an advanced professional caliber DSLR. Ain't technology great!

Rebuilding our banner above.

New Search Capabilities:
We have added more powerful search capabilities to our blog. Check the feature at the top of the column to the right. By typing a word or subject, you can search this entire blogsite for article previously posted containing the word or subject you typed. If you want more information, you can search all the sites we have linked to in the past. Finally, you can search the entire Web. Essentially, you can log on this blogsite and find everything and anything about photography.

Let us know what you think of the new skin/banner.

Thank you for reading,

I have some news concerning the new K-7.

Visitors to this page also liked: See "Recommended Reading" on the right column. We honor reciprocal links. Email: brqyvn@aol.com

Hi Pentaxian friends.

The Pentax K-7 production model will be available in July. I hope it will be on July 7th, as it would be the availability of the K-7 on 7/7. I have started writing the new book on the K-7. It will hopefully be ready at the same time as the production camera. Here is the preliminary cover for the book. Note that I have included a film strip. I will incorporate sequential photos into it to illustrate the ability of the camera to shoot HD videos.

There will be plenty of color pictures and illustrations to clearly help in the learning process and to make the book as clear as possible as a reference manual. I am contemplating releasing the book in three forms. A printed version, an e-book version readable on a computer screen with no printing capabilities and an e-book version with printing capabilities, but with watermarks (copyright) on the background of each page bottom.

Speaking of photos and illustrations, I invite all of the readers of this blog to submit pictures (the bests of your bests) to incorporate in the book. I cannot afford to pay for pictures, but you will have the full credit below your photo and will have you photos viewed by thousands of readers from all over the world. You can submit your pictures to:

brqyvn@aol.com Please enter "K-7 pictures" in the subject line.

Your pictures will never be sold or published in other media except for the K-7 book. (Except of course if someone would like to purchase your image, in which case we would refer them to you directly.) I'm a photographer too, and I respect your rights. I just think it would be more interesting to have pictures from other photographers other than just mine. Please shower me with your good photographs.

Clarification: The pictures do not need to be from the K-7. Any pictures taken with a Pentax DSLR will suffice. I will use these pictures to illustrate techniques, lighting, etc.

--------------------------------------------------------

On another note, I received the new Ikan 5.6" HD LCD monitor that can be used with the new K-7, especially when using the HD video capabilities. It uses the new HDMI connection on the K-7. This little gem makes shooting video like you were a film producers. I will have a full review of it's usefulness with the K-7. You can actually use it with the K20D as well in the "Live Mode" or also simply use the larger 5.6" monitor instead of the 2.7" LCD. It is so much easier to look at the results instantly while in the field, away from your computer. Here are a few photos of it installed on another make of DSLR. Imagine the K-7 in its place.

Stay tuned, as this will be an interesting addition to the capabilities of the long awaited Pentax K-7. We are entering a new generation... Still photographer and Videographer with the same tool. How exciting is that? More ways to be interesting!

Hi Pentaxian friends.

We just had a short lucky break in the sun. My daughter Marisa brought my granddaughter to the beach for a surfing lesson. She is a little too small yet, but they are never too young to learn. These are not the killer waves of Hawaii, but hey...they are big to her.

Vacation in Florida during the K-7 launch.

Hi Pentaxian friends.

Although I posted the launch of the K-7 on Wednesday morning, I was actually in Florida spending some quality time with my granddaughter. I had the script written in advance but I was still disappointed when leaks came from all over on Tuesday.

Nonetheless, I will post my impressions of the K-7 and talk about all the wonderful features it brings to the Pentax DSLR series.

For now, although I'm so happy to be with my granddaughter, it has been raining non-stop since I arrived and it will continue through the weekend. We were supposed to go to DisneyWorld, but no such luck this year with all that rain.

I know everybody wants to talk about the K-7, but I took a break from it and shot some pictures with my "still very good" K20D. Here they are:

It's been that way all week.

PENTAX INTRODUCES ADVANCED PENTAX K-7 DIGITAL SLR
New Camera Boasts Variety of Technological Firsts and Major Improvements
Over Previous K Series Cameras

GOLDEN, CO. (May 20, 2009)…PENTAX Imaging Company announced today the launch of the PENTAX K-7 digital SLR camera.

This latest PENTAX K series camera is designed for advanced photographers seeking high-end design and features without the cost of a professional DSLR system. The PENTAX K-7 features a rugged, yet compact new body design, a new 14.6 megapixel CMOS sensor rebuilt from the ground up, and advanced features such as HD Movie Capture and new, unique-to-PENTAX camera controls. Compatible with every PENTAX lens ever made, the high-end K-7 features an abundance of long-anticipated new and improved features that are exclusive to the camera and combine to make it a tremendous photography tool.

“The K-7 will appeal to many current PENTAX SLR photographers who have been asking for more advanced features, but in a smaller, solid, comfortable-to-hold body,” said Ned Bunnell, president, PENTAX Imaging Company. “We also believe the combination of the K-7’s smaller, high quality construction coupled with the growing line-up of our Limited compact prime lenses will appeal to serious shooters who currently don’t own or previously hadn’t considered adding a PENTAX to their camera bag.”

The most significant features of the PENTAX K-7 that have never been offered before in any K series digital camera, and in some cases any camera, include:

· A compact, magnesium alloy body that is one of the smallest in the advanced photo enthusiast category to reduce bulk and allow users to travel light while maintaining durability and build quality (seven percent smaller than the K20D and up to 25 percent smaller than other cameras in the same class).
· A new 14.6 megapixel CMOS sensor rebuilt from the ground up to minimize noise, adds four channel output for fast image capture, and the ability to capture HD quality movies. It is the ideal combination of resolution and file size, allowing very large (poster size and larger) prints and cropping flexibility.
· A new 77-segment metering system quickly and accurately determines exposure for even the most complex and dynamic lighting situations.
· HD Movie capture features adjustable quality and resolution settings, aperture control, as well as mechanical Shake Reduction, and an external microphone terminal for recording stereo sound.* The K-7 will capture video at the default standard of 1280x720 resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio (equivalent to 720p), 1536x1024 resolution with a 3:2 aspect ratio, or 640x416 resolution with a 3:2 aspect ratio (equivalent to VGA quality), all shot at 30 frames per second.
· An HDMI port with selectable output resolution (1080i, 720p, 480p, and auto) offers high resolution playback of images and video on modern high definition TV’s.
· A Dedicated AF-assist lamp further improves autofocus response and accuracy in low light conditions.
· An Electronic Level function ensures that images have truly level horizons to minimize post-capture editing.
· An innovative in-camera Lens Correction function that electronically adjusts for Distortion and Lateral Chromatic Aberrations to maximize image quality with DA series lenses.
· A dedicated Mirror Lock-up function eliminates image blur due to mirror movement during long exposures.
· A High Dynamic Range (HDR) image capture mode captures three images then combines them in camera to widen the exposure gamut to bring out detail in all exposure areas of images.
· A composition adjustment feature in Live View allows minor shifts in the framing and composition of images using the Shake Reduction mechanism without having to physically move the camera. This feature is ideal for tripod use.
· A programmable embedded copyright function preserves artistic integrity and image ownership during capture via a keypad that may record ownership in metatag data.

*Due to the compact size of the K-7 camera and the in-body Shake Reduction mechanism, a camera mounted microphone is a highly recommended accessory for optimal audio quality when capturing video.

A variety of K series camera features that are significantly improved in the PENTAX K-7 include:

· A striking 3 inch LCD with 921,000 dot resolution is perfect for detailed image or movie capture and review using the Live View function.
· A weather, dust and cold resistant (to 14° F or -10° C) body makes the K-7 the perfect camera for use in any environment, inside the studio or when travelling in any weather.
· Fast 5.2 frame-per-second shooting with a new PRIME II Image processing engine, which features fast circuitry and 4 channel output that is ideal for sporting events or any fast action situation.
· A top shutter speed of 1/8000 sec freezes even the fastest action in well lit settings.
· Live View mode, now with contrast AF, Face Detection, and optional histogram, grid, and bright/dark area display, allows you to quickly compose your images without having your eye against the viewfinder.
· A 100 percent field-of-view viewfinder (92X magnification) and bright focusing screen are ideal for accurate image composition and accurate focus.
· The PENTAX 11-point autofocus system features improved focus algorithms over previous generation K series DSLR cameras, providing faster, more responsive AF.
· The PENTAX-original Shake Reduction system now compensates for rotational sensor movement improving the sharpness of your images at the moment of capture.
· The K-7’s Dust Reduction system, improved over previous K series cameras, features a piezo-ceramic vibration action to the sensor’s low-pass filter for dust-fee image capture.
· A new high capacity battery features extended battery life, ideal for travel photography or video work.
· Advanced image capture settings, digital filters, and aspect ratio provide outstanding flexibility and creativity while minimizing the need for computer image manipulation.
· Custom Image modes with advanced parameter settings including new Key adjustment allow users to customize the processing mode to suit personal creative style.

Other K series innovations featured on the PENTAX K-7 include:
· Multiple exposure settings, including Green, Program, Sv, Tv, Av, TAv, M, Bulb, X-sync, and USER modes, provide extensive creative control over the exposure for photographers of all experience levels.
· Advanced white balance settings include highly customizable white balance fine tuning, color temperature adjustment, and post image capture manual white balance selection for perfect pictures in even the most difficult lighting.
· Dynamic Range setting with adjustable shadow correction brings out hidden or lost details in both highlights and shadows for even the highest-contrast, dynamic lighting.
· Dedicated PC socket for studio flash offers convenience for the studio photographer without adding hot shoe adapters.
· Advanced capture options include multi-exposure and interval shooting for creative special effects and time-lapse photography.

Along with the body, PENTAX announced a D-BG4 battery grip for exclusive use with the PENTAX K-7. This battery grip may be used in combination with the camera’s rechargeable lithium-ion battery to double camera’s battery life. The D-BG4 also accepts 6 AA batteries in a alternate battery tray for added freedom when shooting in the field. With a vertical shutter-release button, e-dials, AE-lock and a new focus button, the grip features the same weather-resistance, dustproof and coldproof construction as the PENTAX K-7.

PENTAX also announced two weather-resistant lens models developed specifically for PENTAX digital SLRs. The smc DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL WR and the smc DA 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED WR kit lenses feature weather-resistant seals to handle damp, inclement conditions. Complementing K series camera bodies, both lenses blend versatility with affordability, giving the casual photographer a broader canvas without having to carry a multitude of lenses.

The PENTAX K-7 body only will ship in July 2009 for $1,299.95 USD. The PENTAX D-BG4 battery grip also will ship in July 2009 for $229.95. The newest weather-resistant lenses will be priced at $199.95 for the DA 18-55mm and $249.95 for the DA 50-200mm. These products also will ship in July 2009.

I'm so sorry that almost all information about the K-7 was leaked.

Hi Pentaxian friends.

We just can't have nice things anymore. In this age of instant gratification, keeping information secret about an unreleased product has become nearly impossible, as the latest news about the K-7 has shown us.

Someone somewhere got their grubby little hands on a few unreleased photos of the K-7 and plastered them all over the internet, ruining the surprise for everyone and stealing the thunder from legitimate Pentax representatives. It's a crying shame, but I do have a silver lining.

I scoured the internet looking to see just how much information really had made it out ahead of deadline. The photos are real, but the specs not all accurate. There is misinformation being posted about the K-7, so my advice would be to stop believing all the early leaks and wait until tomorrow. It's worth waiting for, believe me.

Thank you for reading,

Someone from 2CH(Japanese Forum site) claimed that he's sure about: - Name: K7 (with or without "D") - Size: slightly smaller than K20D - Shape: peculiar, rectangular prism housing - Official announcement: during last 10 days of May - Delivery: end of June, beginning of July - Pricing: around 1,500 Eu (probably somewhat less) So yes, your idea about the size seems right.Much less solid, but perhaps already quite close to the truth, are the rumoured specs: - Same sensor as the K20D - Up to 6400 ISO with better noise treatment - 5 images/sec - 100 % viewfinder - Better weatherproofing - Mirror lockup - Liveview and HD Video - Better stabilizer . - Better DRE mode - 77 zones light metering - Much better AF system even with non-SDM lenses - 3 inches/ 920 000 pixels screen with in-body editing (crop...) - 1/8000 shutter with 1/250 sync

This an addition to the previously posted Pentax K-7 specs (some specs are repeated):
15 MP new APS-C CMOS sensor
ISO 50-6400
5 fps (till 10 fps in 6 MP mode)
100 % viewfinder, 1.1 x
Liveview and HD Video 1920*1080
77 AF points in LV
11-point TTL double-cross sensor
77 zones light metering
1/8000 shutter with 1/250 sync

-----------------------------------------------------------

Supposed specs for the ‘K7D’ are as follows:

* Square sensor? 1.3 crop factor.* A new, overhauled, excellent AF system* At least 5fps* 1.0x viewfinder* 720p video with audio* 1/8000 shutter* 2.7 or 3.0 inch VGA res screen
And here are some other purported specs for the new DSLR:
* Same sensor as the K20D* Up to 6400 ISO with better noise treatment* 5 images/sec* 100 % viewfinder* Better weatherproofing* Mirror lockup* Liveview and HD Video* Better stabilizer .* Better DRE mode* 77 zones light metering* Much better AF system even with non-SDM lenses* 3 inches/ 920 000 pixels screen with in-body editing (crop…)* 1/8000 shutter with 1/250 sync
I really hope Pentax comes out with something mind blowing because they could really use it.
